What is Teen FOCUS?
An increasing number of the male population in the Tarrant County Detention Center are teen fathers (ages 14-16 years old). NewDay teaches a Juvenile fathering class to these detainees weekly. Adapting the FOCUS curriculum (taught in the adult class), NewDay chaplains stress the importance of a father’s role in the life of his child and address the challenges unique to teen fathers. Most of these fathers come from homes where the father was not present and do not have adequate role models. The curriculum also incorporates the Character Counts trait of the week into class for a more holistic approach in educating the teen fathers.
