NewDay has provided chaplains in the Tarrant County Juvenile Justice Center since 2000. Detainment in the Juvenile Center is a sobering experience as juveniles facesthe consequences of their unwise choices. Approximately 700 children are referred to the Juvenile Justice Center in Tarrant County yearly with 65 to 70 juveniles in detention each week.
For many of these children, this is their first introduction to the criminal justice system and NewDay Services offers tools to them that will enable them to take positive control of their lives. By providing emotional support and classes, the juvenile has the opportunity of returning to the community with the tools they need to change their lives. They can be returned to society determined to contribute to their own success. That is the goal of NewDay Services.
- NewDay provides male and female chaplains to the Juvenile Justice Center. They provide emotional comfort and support to the juveniles and their families.
- The “Character Counts!” Program shows juveniles they can choose to act positively instead of negatively. The daily classes cast a vision of what they can become and through the “Character Counts!” traits they can make different choices in their lives.
- Care Bear Community Service is a part of the character counts program. Juveniles staying on their very best behavior can earn Care Bears which are delivered to Cook’s Children’s Hospital and given to a child in need, thus the juveniles actions a positive impact on the community. Care Bears used in this program are donated to NewDay by the community and if you or your organization would like to participate please let us know by using the contact page.
- Life Skills Training is a three-day, merit-based course that enhances the Character Counts program. It teaches the teenagers why and how they should look for work, including how to be a good employee, and responsible money management.
